Timothy deWaal Malefyt is vice-president and director of cultural discoveries at BBDO Worldwide, the global advertising agency. Dr. Malefyt applies anthropological theory and methods to analyze consumer motivation and behavior in marketing and advertising. His categories of marketing experience include automotive, broadcast media, cosmetics and beauty aids, financial services, food and restaurant services, health care, the Internet, luxury goods, men, women, and teens/youth.

Previously at D'Arcy Masius Benton and Bowles in Detroit and Avrett Free Ginsberg in New York, Dr. Malefyt has brand experience with Cadillac, Duracell, Gillette, KFC, Nissan, Pepsi, Pizza Hut and many other companies.

He holds a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Brown University and received Fulbright and National Science Foundation scholarships to study flamenco and tourism in Spain. Dr. Malefyt co-authored the book Advertising Cultures.
